2010 , And

I had been running 2007 for the past few years and I was quite happy with the protection it provided my PC. Yes, as it churned through my hard drive looking for suspicious files and applications, it added around five minutes to the time that it took to boot-up my computer.  My wife hated it. Her colleagues at work were trying to convince her that free programs were better, faster and, well, free! I lived with a mild resentment towards but I thought that this was the price of piece of mind and being protected.

This all changed when a few weeks ago it was time to renew my product license for 2007.  The renewal process taught me a number of lessons and I thought that I’d share what I learned about with others.

Lesson 1: Auto Renew and
I was on auto-renew. This meant that all I had to do was sit back and watch my subscription rollover after 365 days was up.  Not so fast – I kept getting prompted to validate my subscription even after the renewal date.  It turns out that what I needed to do was upgrade the whole application. In future I will go into my customer account and turn-off the auto renew.  Why would you want to do this?  I would turn off the auto renew so that I could go to the , get a 2010 coupon and save a few dollars.

Lesson 2: Free Can Be A Blessing In Disguise
I was not impressed when, after repeatedly going through the validation procedure and seeing that my subscription was indeed renewed that, the actual application needed to be upgraded (fortunately at no cost to me).  I had no choice in the matter – I had to upgrade the application to continue receiving virus definition updates. I texted support and they confirmed the situation. (It was actually a very useful support session)  At least the upgrade was free. The link provided by support started a download, which automatically uninstalled 2007 and installed 2010.  It was actually very simple. It was not until I went through application upgrade and rebooted that I appreciated the huge difference just in alone.  Once 2010 was installed, my computer went back to booting almost as quickly as it did the first day I took it out of the box!

Lesson 3: How To Protect Multiple Computers With The Same License
Like many other people, my household has more than one computer.  Imagine how silly I felt when I went online and purchased separate product keys for each of my computers only to discover that my product version covered protection for up to three computers on the same key! Yes, most plans are actually multi-computer licenses!

Lesson 4: 2010 Is Way Faster Than The Competition
According to the benchmarking study performed by PassMark Software in November 2009, “Antivirus, and Total Products Performance Benchmarking (2010)” 2010 performed best over-all for both paid and free software.  Yes – 2010 was even faster than Kapersky, BitDefender and Avast!  According to my experience, I agree that has done a great job in speeding up 2010.

Lesson 5: Customer Account Website – It is worth a look
The MyNortonAccount is free – all you have to do is choose a password and you are set up. The MyNortonAccount webpage provides you with access to manage all of your subscriptions in one place, enhanced customer support, easy access to product , simple tools to reinstall your products and special discount offers just for customers. Now, I can say that I have used most of these services and they did make my life much easier.

Lesson 6: Save Money With 2010
This is dead easy.  Symantec has published various for the family of products.  All you need to know is where to go and get them.  One great source for Symantec (good in US and Canada) is
www.canbuy.ca/infoframe.asp?MerchID=183 .

Now that 2010 has been proven to be the fastest antivirus software on the market coupled with the savings from the 2010 , the gap between 2010 and free software is closing fast! Tell all your friends who are hanging onto their free antivirus software!
